ATRIUM participates in CIRC-HUB Workshop on Bio-Based and Circular Construction
On 5 March 2026, the ATRIUM project took part in a collaborative workshop organised by the BIOBUILD Project under the CIRC-HUB Cluster, held in Naples. The event coincided with World Energy Efficiency Day, providing an appropriate setting to reflect on innovation and sustainability in the construction sector.
The workshop brought together several European projects working on bio-based materials, circular construction, and sustainable building solutions. The aim was to exchange knowledge, present ongoing work, and identify common challenges and opportunities across projects.
The first part of the workshop focused on presentations from participating projects. The BIOBUILD project introduced the innovative technologies it is developing, providing insight into their approach to advancing bio-based solutions for the construction sector. Other projects, including ATRIUM, also had the opportunity to share their work and highlight the progress being made in developing sustainable materials and production processes.
A co-creation session through the World Café format
Following the presentations, participants engaged in an interactive World Café co-creation session, designed to encourage open discussion and collaborative problem-solving. Attendees were divided into smaller groups, each focusing on a specific theme related to sustainable construction.
The discussion rooms explored three key topics:
- Bio-Based & Circular Materials: Participants discussed the most promising materials currently being developed within their projects and identified the technical, economic and regulatory barriers that still limit their wider adoption in the construction market.
- Energy Efficiency & Building Performance: This session focused on the main obstacles to achieving energy-efficient buildings, including gaps in technical knowledge, design methods, and skills needed to improve building performance.
- Innovation & Circular Construction Practices: Participants examined how projects are applying circular economy principles in construction and reflected on existing gaps that need to be addressed to enable wider implementation of circular practices.
The discussions were enriched by the participation of Keti Medarova, representing the European Commission, who joined the exchange and contributed valuable perspectives on the policy context surrounding sustainable construction and bio-based innovation.
The workshop provided a valuable opportunity to strengthen connections between projects working on similar challenges and to explore potential synergies within the CIRC-HUB cluster. By bringing together researchers, innovators and policy representatives, the event helped foster dialogue on how to accelerate the development and uptake of bio-based, circular and energy-efficient solutions for the built environment.
ATRIUM is pleased to contribute to these collaborative discussions and looks forward to continuing the exchange of knowledge with fellow projects working toward a more sustainable construction sector.
