Exploring Sustainable Materials at Ben-Gurion University: Mycelium-Based Composites Take the Stage

On November 5th, the Department of Environmental, Geo-informatics and Urban Planning at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev kicked off the new academic semester with its annual Poster Competition, gathering more than 20 researchers and students to present their latest work.

The event showcased a wide range of innovative studies addressing today’s most pressing environmental and urban challenges. Among them, ATRIUM was represented through a poster titled “Myco-structures formulation process using liquid mycelium culture”, presented by PhD student Cesar Silva, involved in the project.

This research focuses on developing a methodology for the production of mycelium-based composites (MBC) using liquid mycelium culture: an approach that holds significant promise for scaling up sustainable material production. The poster detailed the applied methodology, the formation of mycelium “skins”, and a comprehensive characterization of the resulting bio-composites, including volume, density, and thermal conductivity.

The session included short presentations to a jury of department professors, with Prof. David Pearlmutter and Prof. Erez Gal among those attending.
