Exploring fungi innovation at FUNGA Fest 2025
Held from 7–10 December 2025 at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev (Beer-Sheva, Israel), FUNGA Fest brought together scientists, students, industry representatives, foragers, and fungi enthusiasts for four days of exchange across disciplines. The event explored fungi from cultural, scientific, ecological, technological, and medical perspectives, highlighting their growing relevance across research and applied innovation.
As part of the event, César Silva, PhD student at the Environmental, Geo-informatics and Urban Planning Department at Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, presented a poster titled: “Myco-structures formulation process using liquid mycelium culture.”
The poster focused on the bio-fabrication of mycelium-based bio-composites using liquid fermentation, addressing key challenges related to process scalability and material performance. The work included a detailed characterization of the developed samples, showing thermal insulation properties comparable to conventional materials such as expanded polystyrene, underlining the potential of mycelium-based materials for future construction and insulation applications.
Across four days, the conference featured lectures and discussions covering topics related to mycotechnology. The programme also included visits to two mushroom farming facilities, offering participants first-hand insight into cultivation practices and production systems.
